Elle Decoration talked about Truong Quang Vinh Architect – ONONDETAILS

When talking about ONONDETAILS’products, founder of this brand Truong Quang Vinh Architect often uses the word “emotion”. Beyond details, techniques and materials, the “emotion” associated with the local consciousness is perhaps the destination and also the source of the feeling of warmth,  conciseness and originality in the furniture design of this Vietnamese brand.

ONONDETAILS was founded for the initial purpose of completing the interior space in accordance with the design idea. During the operation of VBMAD architecture company, Truong Quang Vinh architect always had difficulty finding furniture construction company specifically designed for each project. Even with complete drawings, it’s very hard for workers to make an item that meets the criteria of “proportion”, “material” and “detail”. This brought Vinh to the decision to establish a high-end furniture manufacturing company where he can control every product placed in the architectural space he created, also ensure consistency, the spiritual connection of the space and the products within it.

From the perspective of space creators and interior product designers, Truong Quang Vinh Architect has specific orientation and very clear requirements: the furnitures must be compatible with many design styles; Flexibility in usage, space arrangement and organization; Comfortable, friendly with high finishing details. Especially, exploiting traditional indigenous materials to create the difference. ONONDETAILS’ design philosophy is expressed through “details” that demonstrate the evolution of the constant flow of creativity, fresh ideas, continuous operating process and identifying features of Vietnamese culture – The “details” help us visualize the creator and origin of each item.

With the “ambition” to bring Vietnamese furniture to the world, together with Vietnamese designers, we created “Vietnamese Design” – a book written from endless effort and hard work, which can stand next to “American Design”, “Denmark Design”, “Brazilian Design”… Truong Quang Vinh architect is aware that exploiting the depth of local culture is the key to making a design stand out and recognizable in the international market. Vietnamese culture, more precisely, the culture of our hometown Quang Nam is the endless inspiration for Truong Quang Vinh architect to create ONONDETAILS’ designs. Above all, the items have emotions inside that are difficult to express in words, as inspired by the most familiar and simple things in the architectural heritage of our ancestors. The detail of the rafters in a wooden house in Hoi An, the wooden latch in a door or the brocade patterns of the ethnic people, can spark a strong urge for the designer and transform into emotional attachment when recognized by the designer.

Besides the criteria of “minimalism and going into detail”, Mr.Vinh also wants to exploit all the characteristics of traditional materials so that beauty can appear original and complete while still being encapsulated in a compact whole. “Following nature” is an aspect that he admires in Eastern philosophy and always conveys it in both his architectural and furniture designs. This can be clearly seen in preserving and honoring the natural characteristics of wood materials such as grain, moisture, and even cracks. The way ONONDETAILS handles and treats materials is the same as the way our ancestors have done for many generations: sawn wood must be left to dry naturally for two years before being produced, make suitable parts depending on the location of the tree trunk, depending on the weather, choose different types of wood.

One of the most impressive designs of ONONDETAILS is Hoang Sa Coffee Table – The table is inspired by the fluctuations of water waves, the originality of wood materials, combined with contemporary design. Made from natural tropical wood, retaining its cracks and available in 4 different sizes, this is a flexible and interesting design. In particular, the wavy details create contrasting shadows on the table top when light shines on it, creating a friendly, warm feeling, evoking the simultaneous stillness and movement of space and time. This design also marks the first time ONONDETAILS has created black color using the manual firing method. “It took up to 3 failed burning samples to find a way to burn so that the black color is the deepest, most even and most emotional”, Truong Quang Vinh shared. Above all, through the product, he wants the words “Hoang Sa” to always be remembered and exist in the minds of every Vietnamese person.

Born in a context where not only the architecture and interior industries but also many other industries are flourishing, ONONDETAILS gains momentum from the high demands of consumers for a piece of furniture. The fact that customers are increasingly interested in “authenticity” and the story behind each detail and material gives domestic brands the opportunity to dig deeper into the cultural values and identity of the nation and country. Vietnam not only has advantages in raw material resources as one of the world’s largest wooden furniture exporters, but also possesses many skilled craftsmen with many years of experience. For Truong Quang Vinh, they are not only a high-quality workforce but also a “repository” for young designers to learn and develop. However, to bring more Vietnamese products to the world, the market still needs more companies to produce and design their own products; As well as receiving attention and investment in technology and techniques for researching new materials and design solutions.

Self-identified as an architect who loves and is passionate about design work, Truong Quang Vinh is still nurturing the fire of enthusiasm for VBMAD and ONONDETAILS. For him, luck is being able to do what you like and live where you want; is when creative activities are still “ON”, always new with many goals and plans for the future. One of them is to further research other traditional materials to make the “Vietnamese Design” collection more and more diverse, satisfying both personal passions and the growing needs of domestic and international customers.
