Truong Quang Vinh is a Vietnamese architect and furniture designer, and the founder of ONONDETAILS. He designs every ONONDETAILS piece.
Background
Vinh graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Science and Technology, The University of Da Nang, in 2015. He also runs the architecture office VBMAD. He started ONONDETAILS in Da Nang in 2017 because he could not find furniture good enough for the houses he was designing, so he began to make it himself.
How he works
Vinh draws on everyday Vietnamese culture, especially the old houses of Hội An and the crafts of Quang Nam, the province he comes from. He describes his approach as “minimal, but precise”. Most pieces are made in oak, walnut and Quynh Do, a red hardwood from central Vietnam. Surfaces are chiselled by hand, some are burnt black with fire, and the wood is finished with oil.
Selected work
Gióng Rocking Horse. 32 strips of oak and walnut, the grain of each strip reversed against the next so the curve stays stable. About 60 hours of hand work. The first prototype did not rock properly and the curve was reshaped.
Hoàng Sa Coffee Table. First made in solid wood, carved by hand into waves and burnt black. A later edition has flat white tops with waves, horses and mountains painted by hand in blue, after Vietnamese blue-and-white ceramics.
Also: TQV Chair, Bánh Chưng Sofa, YÊN Lounge Chair, Bau Bed.
